Yemin Moshe Neighborhood, Jerusalem.
Today Yemin Moshe is one of Jerusalem’s most picturesque neighborhoods, enchanting
visitors with quaint streets and spectacular views. But back in the 1890s, it was the first
neighborhood built outside the walls of the then overcrowded city. British philanthropist
Moshe Montefiore funded this project and erected a windmill to provide an income for
the hesitant residents. Alas, the windmill proved to be ineffective here and remained only
as a local landmark known by locals simply as “Montefiore’s mill”.
